For my next trick……….

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Each year round December 3rd, I get a year older but not always wiser.   I still think I’m 18 and can do pretty much anything.  Don’t tell me you’ve never felt that way, all teenagers do.  But it’s this time of year that I feel my age, even older. Christmas is comming, what we’ve worked for all year.  The store is decorated, the jewels are cleaned and the Christmas wrapping paper is out.  The only thing missing is sleep, for me at least.  I have yet to figure out in my 12 years here at Hollands why everyone (MEN) waits till the last second to get that perfect gift for that perfect person (LADIES).  But we.. I mean they do.  Along with that perfect gift comes custom work.  I Love to create something that nobody else has, but I feel Christmas breathing down my neck. A deadline, THE deadline of all deadlines.   When you try to squeeze two months of work into 25 days, something has got to give.  Usually it’s sleep.  That’s when I feel my age.  I’m the type of person who needs at least 8 or 9 hours a night, now most nights I’m lucky to get 5 or 6.  After a few weeks it catches up with me and by Christmas eve I crash like an old, worn out computer.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is the assembling of the childrens gifts from the “big, red guy”.  I get that warm fuzz feeling, you know RAGE,  when I sit up half the night trying to get a bunch of plastic pieces to fit together so that they match the picture on the box.  Doll houses, bikes, toy cars etc….. they’re all fun.  That’s when the magic happens.  I usually go to bed tired and frustrated but in the night I believe that elves clean up my mess and finish the assembling of the toys.  Maybe it’s my wife.  Who cares it’s done and all is well in the morning for the kids.  God bless them!!!  My next trick, after all this, is to sleep 3 days straight.  I’m going to do my best.

Thank God for the best job and the best customers in the entire world!!!!!!!!!!   Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
