Jaipur, India.  The largest Tanzanite on record has just been cut and polished and weighs in at just over 525 carats.  This unusually large gem is scheduled to be on display at the Tuscon Gem show in mid February.  The Tanzanite was mined in early 2008 and has taken nearly 1 year to achieve the maximum weight retention from the rough while highlighting its rare and unique color.  The Tanzanite was added to the birthstone list in 2000 and designated for the December month.  It was the first change made to the list in over 90 years.  It has since been named “THE BIRTHSTONE” for new babies regardless of the birth month.  The most desired color for Tanzanite is a vivid violetish blue.
