Primary Gemstone: Alexandrite

Alternate Gemstone(s): Perl

History: Alexandrite is the traditional birthstone for June. It is the most popular and famous of all the color-change stones. It's color swings from a raspberry to plum color in natural light to a bluish-green in incandescent light. Alexandrite was first discovered in 1830 in Russia and was named after Czar Alexander II. Today most of the good quality Alexandrite comes from Brazil and Sri Lanka and can be as costly as fine diamonds.

June's alternate stone, the Pearl, is the product of an oyster's defense mechanism. Nacre surrounds the foreign irritant in layers forming a pearl. Pearls are evaluated in their shape, size, color, complexion, and luster. Pearls vary in color from white, or an off-white with a hint of color, to pink, brown and black depending on the type of mollusk and the water conditions. Pearls were once thought to be the tears of the Gods.
